South Africa is witnessing a significant increase in the number of infections with a new type of Corona virus that contains a large number of mutations and is spreading at an amazing speed.
There is a skyrocketing number of cases, but it's too early to say anything, even though there are unconfirmed reports of infections among vaccinated people, says Penny Moore, a virologist at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
Dr. Richard Lisels, an infectious disease doctor at the University of KwaZulu, South Africa, added, "The mutations that exist are currently worrying and we need more work to understand the nature of this new mutation in the Corona virus."
Dr. Aris Katzurakis, who studies the evolution of the virus at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, asks whether this new variant of the Corona virus reduces the effectiveness of the vaccine because it has so many mutations. In the end, says Penny Moore, it is not yet clear whether this new variable will move out of South Africa as the delta variable or not, and countries that have reached the delta variable should watch for signs of this new variable.
